Charging of ZUBR LI-ION traction lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) batteries

Charging of ZUBR LI-ION lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) batteries is characterized by high efficiency and safety. Due to the applied technology, charging can be carried out with high currents, allowing the battery to be fully restored in just 2 hours. Let's consider the key stages of charging and the advantages of chargers specially designed for LFP traction batteries.

One of the features of lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) technology is the ability to charge the battery with fairly high currents, up to 0.5C (up to 50% of the battery capacity). Thus, most ZUBR LI-ION traction batteries can be fully charged in just 2 hours. Moreover, such charging modes are completely safe and do not lead to any negative consequences in the operation of the battery.

It is important to know that the modes and stages of charging LFP traction batteries have their own special parameters, so chargers for lead-acid batteries and other types of lithium-ion batteries are not suitable for lithium-iron-phosphate.

Stages of charging LFP traction batteries:

1. The preliminary stage of charging begins under the condition of complete discharge, the first 5% of the capacity is charged with a current limitation so that the cells restore their operating characteristics.
2. The first and main stage of charging is charging with a constant current, when all the advantages of the technology are revealed. At this time, the charger delivers its maximum power and the so-called fast charging occurs, which continues until 80% of the battery capacity level.
3. Additional charging — when certain voltage values are reached (usually 80%), the charger begins to gradually reduce the current and perform additional charging at a constant voltage. In this way, the next 15% of the capacity is charged, and the charge level reaches 95%.

4. Balancing. Then comes the moment when the charging current begins to be limited by the battery cells, and not by the charger. In this mode, the cells inside the battery are aligned and balanced, and the last 5% of the capacity is charged. Also at this time, the active balancing system inside the battery is turned on, then the excess energy of the cells is not simply converted into heat, but is redirected to less charged cells.
5. Charging stops when 100% capacity is reached and the current decreases to less than 10% of the maximum.

ZUBR LI-ION traction battery chargers have intelligent microprocessor control, which allows for efficient conversion of electrical energy and its direction to the battery.

Each charger is configured and tested individually with the battery that it is equipped with. At the same time, in standard solutions we do not use CAN communication, which allows using ZUBR LI-ION chargers with any compatible LFP batteries, this allows unifying devices in the equipment fleet.

It is important to note that during charging LFP ZUBR LI-ION batteries do not emit any harmful substances or explosive gases, which eliminates the need for a charging room and fire partitions. This is confirmed by the expert opinion of the Academy of the Ministry of Emergency Situations of the Russian Federation on the explosion and fire safety of ZUBR LI-ION batteries. To charge the battery, simply connect the charger connector to the battery connector, the charge will start and stop automatically. This avoids operator errors, nothing will lead to a reduction in service life or damage to the battery due to carelessness.

We usually offer ZUBR LI-ION traction batteries with a single connector, which is used for both operation and charging. However, in some situations it is necessary to use separate connectors for loading and charging. In such cases, when the charger is connected, the battery load connector is automatically disconnected, which protects against accidental movement of equipment with the charger connected, and therefore against damage to the equipment.
